Modern flat screen televisions just don’t have the same footprint on top to hold speakers, remotes, and Wii sensor bars! Over the past week I’ve seen two different brands of shelves for your flat screen television, so I thought I would share them.

First up is the ScreenDeck. As you can see, the ScreenDeck uses the mounting holes on the back of your flat screen television for the shelf’s rails. The shelf is not very deep, and would be best suited for a center channel speaker or maybe a cable box. Also, if your TV is wall-mounted, this thing won’t work.

Along those same lines is the larger and not-so-eloquently-named Set Top Center Channel Shelf from OmniMount.

OmniMount’s shelf is much deeper — deep enough that it can hold most DVD players. Or VCRs. Or a record player. Or maybe all of them. The OmniMount uses plastic “hooks” to connect to your TV. I’m sure it’s safe and sturdy, but it’s definitely less aesthetically pleasing than the ScreenDeck.

Both shelves are available on Amazon (ScreenDeck | OmniMount). The ScreenDeck is $40 and the OmniMount is $25.

One of the things I miss most about my old, gigantic CRT television is how much crap I could stack, pile, and balance on top of it.
