Yesterday, a co-worker of mine found the web adress of another co-worker’s blog (whom I’ll refer to as Mr. X). Mr. X can be best described as a highly intelligent but fairly antisocial individual. My personal opinion is that he’s not antisocial by choice, but his demeanor creates such odd social tension that most people simply avoid conversing with him. Mr. X has no concept of small talk which makes instigating any non-work related conversation with him difficult to impossible. I’ve always got the impression that Mr. X was much more comfortable conversing with computers than with people anyhow. There’s no denying that the guy’s good at what he does — he’s just not particularly good at explaining to the rest of us exactly what that is, or applying his solutions to our problems. I’ve got the impression that Mr. X is happiest when no one is engaging\/bothering him, and since I’m a big fan of “the path of least resistance,” I’ve granted him that wish.<\/p>\n

So as the link to Mr. X’s blog got passed around work yesterday, one by one we all discovered what Mr. X really thought of us. The common theme throughout his work-related blog entries is how stupid the rest of us are. In one entry we’re all labeled as “white trash”. In another, he comments on how he’s “obviously the smartest person in the basement.” And maybe he is, who knows. What I do know is, I feel like I’ve wasted an awful lot of time and energy trying to be nice or at least sociable to someone who considers me and my co-workers bumbling idiots. On several occasions on the way to lunch I’ve made it a point to go out of my way, stop by Mr. X’s desk and invite him. Had I known he thought we were all “disgusting pigs” (his words), I wouldn’t have bothered. <\/p>\n

And, I’m sure I won’t bother in the future. Mr. X is currently on vacation, but it’ll sure be tough to look at him the same way when he returns. Before, I went out of my way to try and include him when possible. In the future, I’m pretty sure I’ll go out of my way to avoid him — if my puny pea-sized brain can remember to do so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
