As everybody around her knows, Susan is nearly impossible to buy Christmas gifts for because she doesn’t want much. Hearing Susan say “I sure would like a (whatever)” is like finding a twenty dollar bill blowing down the street — you’re lucky, and you had better hang on to it. Each year around her birthday and Christmas, she’ll mention one or two things — just enough for me to hand out whenever people ask me, “So, what does Susan want this year?”<\/p>\n

This year was supposed to be simple. After getting my iPhone last week, Susan said she would like one too. My phone (with a two-year contract) was $199. Today after lunch we swung by the AT&T store to do the transaction. Not only was it something she wanted, but it was something I knew no one else would get her.<\/p>\n

Turns out, Susan’s phone is not eligible for an upgrade until March, and the guy behind the counter either would or could not bend the rules despite the fact we have been with AT&T for over 10 years. Our options were to wait until March and pay $199, or buy the phone today for $599. The third alternative was to open another phone line in Mason’s name, put the iPhone on that, and then cancel Susan’s phone next March. <\/p>\n
