Recently while walking through Mason’s school I saw a bunch of papers titled “Memories of Shedeck” hanging in the hallways. On each one, some of the older kids (fifth and sixth graders) had shared some of their memories of Shedeck Elementary. As you know, I also attended fifth and sixth grades at Shedeck Elementary. Last fall I dedicated an entire week’s worth of updates to Shedeck memories. However, if I was only given a single piece of paper on which to jot down some Shedeck memories, it would have looked like this:

I remember … “Brian Olea jumping and diving during a game of dodge ball and hitting the wall so hard he put a giant hole in it.”

I remember … “Jeremy, Jason and I doing a magic show in front of Mr. Hatcher’s class.”

I remember … “Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Smith arguing over who got to swat Dan Hollingsworth first.”

I remember … “Giving a book report dressed as Harry Houdini and escaping from faux-handcuffs on stage.”

I remember … “Dressing up along with Jason and Jeremy as the Three Stooges.”

I remember … “Mrs. Harris calling us ‘Harvey and the Wallbangers’ for making too much noise in the boys’ bathroom.”

I remember … “Being pulled out of class by the librarian to help troubleshoot the school’s computer.”

I remember … “Being the coolest kid in school the day I brought my ghetto blaster and played Thriller during recess.”

I remember … “Mr. Hatcher letting Jeremy, Jason and me play Pente down in the library for days at a time.”

I remember … “Winning the Shedeck t-shirt contest and having my design used for the school’s shirts.”

I remember … “All the popular kids making fun of me the day I brought ‘Weird Al’ to ‘Share a Song Day’ in music class.”

I remember … “Robbie Ogle getting in trouble for french kissing a girl on the playground and wondering what the heck french kissing was.”

I remember … “Volunteering for, growing tired of, and resigning from the after-school crossing guard program, all in the same week.”

I remember … “Ashley coming to school in a Boy George outfit and thinking that was the coolest thing ever.”

I remember … “Mrs. Smith telling me ‘You ruined the class Thanksgiving project’ when we traced our hands to make turkeys and I moved my hand so my handprint would have six fingers instead of five. Yes. Being creative ruins things.”

I remember … “Sitting through sex education and asking ‘When will I get hair under my armpits?”

I remember … “Watching anti-drug films and thinking ‘Is this supposed to make us NOT want to do drugs?”

I remember … “Always volunteering to run the slide projector and advance slides whenever we heard the beep.”

I remember … “Trying to figure out the best way to transport break dancing cardboard to and from school on the bus.”

Of course I remember lots of other things too. Morgan starts pre-k at Shedeck this coming fall; no doubt there will be a part 3 to this series ’round then.
