Yesterday was my 48th birthday, and I spent a lot of the day thinking how lucky I am. I was lucky to have so many people reach out to me both online and in real life to wish me a happy day. I’ve said this before, but sometimes when Facebook prompts me to wish people a happy birthday I forget, or don’t get around to it — but of course on my own birthday, I count and get excited by every single one of them! <\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Susan and I took a quick anniversary\/birthday road trip to Kansas City, Missouri, where we stayed in a unique AirBnB, ate at a couple of fantastic restaurants, and saw some pretty cool things. Yesterday, on my actual birthday, some of our friends and family joined us out by the pool. What a fun day to end the weekend. I’ll be writing more about some of these things later this week.<\/p>\n

I got two food-related surprises for my birthday. The first were these cakes from McDonald’s. We actually ordered one five years ago, but the other day Susan asked me what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday, I jokingly said “another cake from McDonald’s,” and she made it happen. Very few stores keep the cakes in stock, but some of them have the ability to order one for you. Don’t believe the internet hype about these things only costing $9 — they’re about 3x that — but worth it if you are as nostalgic as I am. <\/p>\n

Susan also surprised me by picking up a complete set of this year’s monster cereals (Count Chocula, Frankberry, and Boo Berry) in retro-styled boxes, along with two boxes of Monster Mash, which is all the cereals mixed together. These have been pretty hard to find (and are selling for quite a premium online), so I will be enjoying them slowly over the next few months.<\/p>\n
