After blogging for more than 20 years, it has become more and more difficult to find interesting things to say about annual events like holidays and birthdays. But on my wedding anniversary, it is always easy for me to find something to say. <\/p>\n

Due to the pandemic, Susan and I have spent more time together in our home over the past year than ever before. In 2020 for our 25th wedding anniversary, we planned to take a cruise to Alaska. Obviously, that didn’t happen. “We’ll do it next year,” we said. Instead, we spent twelve months at home together — working from home, eating at home, sleeping at home, and watching television at home. Eventually things lightened up enough to where we could begin to dip our toes into the world a bit. I remember how naughty it felt walking up to a garage sale for the first time in a year, or reentering a restaurant. We haven’t rebooked that cruise yet, but will. Eventually.<\/p>\n

I have seen a lot of social media posts and online articles (with varying degrees of seriousness) in regards to spouses growing tired of spending time with one another during the pandemic. This is where I find something to say so easy. I have never felt closer to my wife nor loved her more than I have over the past year. We’ve watched movies together, gone on long drives together, visited casinos together, and continue to enjoy one another’s company. (And now, with the addition of the pool, we even swim together!) <\/p>\n

That’s not to say we spend every waking moment together. I spent plenty of time in my office on the computer gaming and podcasting, and Susan is often on the go with Girl Scouts and volunteering for things like the high school’s band, but we never do those things to get away from one another. (At least I don’t. Susan might have a different opinion.) But when we’re together, it’s not because we’re stuck — it’s because we want to be together. <\/p>\n

The past year has been trying. We’ve watched news reports and read Facebook posts from friends and family that are truly heartbreaking. Whenever frustration gets the better of me, Susan is always the voice of reason. In this sometimes dark world, Susan has a soul full of light. She’s one of the few people who can make me belly laugh, whether it’s with a quick one liner or one of her (usually terrible) impersonations. <\/p>\n

Sometimes when she’s driving, or cooking, or sitting on the couch taking pictures of cats, I think about all the great adventures we’ve had, and all the ones I hope to have in the future. And when people ask me how long we’ve been married, sometimes I’ll say “a hundred years” before jokingly rolling my eyes.
