I was a junior in high school when Bob Lazar went public with his story. The first time I heard it I specifically remember thinking to myself, I told you so.<\/i><\/p>\n

In 1989, Bob Lazar — a physicist with degrees from MIT and Caltech who had previously worked at the Los Alamos National Lab — blew the lid off of one of the biggest government conspiracies of all time. Lazar had been working for the government at a secret base known as Area 51 to reverse engineer a flying saucer. This was the first time the general public learned about Area 51. Finally, it all made sense!<\/p>\n

The most compelling thing about Bob Lazar and his story is that he doesn’t come off as a loon. With his button-down shirts and Coke bottle glasses, he looks<\/i> like a scientist. Give him a piece of paper and he’ll draw a cross section of the flying saucer he was hired to reverse engineer — one of nine in the government’s possession, according to him. Lazar can talk for hours about the gravity wave propulsion system generated by the craft, which is powered by “element 115.” During his time at S-4 (a secret portion of the secret base), Lazar read and memorized official documents explaining that the craft belonged to aliens from a planet that orbited the “twin binary star system Zeta Reticuli.”<\/p>\n

As a kid who grew up reading UFO books and magazines and well-versed in everything from the Roswell Incident to the Betty and Barney Hill abduction<\/a>, I just knew<\/i> Lazar was telling the truth. Why would an established guy with legitimate credentials go public with such a story and risk his credibility unless it were true?<\/p>\n

Over the years, people have poked holes in various parts of Lazar’s story, and particularly his history. There are no records of Lazar attending Caltech or MIT, and he doesn’t appear in either of their yearbooks. (Lazar says the government erased his records in order to discredit him.) Los Alamos also has no record of his employment, although his name does appear in an old employee phone book. <\/p>\n

This week I watched Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers<\/i>, a 2018 documentary that has been added to Netflix. For what it’s worth, thirty years later, Bob Lazar still sticks to his story. He hasn’t redacted anything, nor has he added to his claims. The documentary doesn’t add any new information to Lazar or his story. It doesn’t prove any of his claims, nor does it disprove them. Filmmaker Jeremy Corbell mostly takes Lazar at his word, handling the scientist with kid gloves.<\/p>\n

One of three things are true. Either Bob Lazar is lying, he’s telling the truth, or he thinks he’s telling the truth. As a seventeen-year-old kid, I was convinced he was telling the truth. I don’t know what to make of Lazar or his story today. I hope he’s telling the truth. He probably isn’t.<\/p>\n

A few years ago, Susan, the kids and I drove out west on vacation and visited Roswell, New Mexico. Every restaurant in town has aliens painted on the windows or statues of them propped up outside. We spent a couple of hours at the Roswell UFO Museum that day. That evening in a hotel room, not far away from the supposed original UFO crash site, I spent some time peeking through the curtains and looking at stars, wishing like a kid that the Bob Lazars of the world were telling the truth. <\/p>\n
