The Fruitless Search for Free Moving Boxes

It’s been twenty-six years since Susan and I first moved in together. As a couple (and later family), we’ve moved a total of six times. When I first moved to Weatherford to live with Susan, it had only been three months since I had quit working at Pizza Hut. As a result, most of my things arrived in boxes that originally held cheese, pepperoni, and cans of pizza sauce. When we moved back from Weatherford to Oklahoma City, most of our moving boxes came from Long John Silver’s. A few months later when we moved to El Reno, we used… (read more)

We’re Buying a New House

If you follow me (or my wife) on social media, you may have already heard the news. If not, here it is: we’re moving. This decision has not been easy, at least not for me. We’ve been looking at houses off and on for about two years now. (As I like to say, we’ve been “looking,” but not “looking-looking.”) We’ve attended at least a dozen open houses, and this is the first one that met enough of our needs for us to even consider. So while the search has been long, once we found this one, we had to make… (read more)

Good News from the Doctor

While sitting in my doctor’s waiting room the morning my birthday, I asked myself, “Why am I doing this again?” Every year on her birthday, Susan takes the day off and schedules her yearly physical. That makes it easy to remember (kind of like changing the batteries on your smoke detectors when you change your clocks for daylight savings time), so I decided to try the same thing this year. Between fasting (so I could do blood work) and not being able to celebrate with my friends at work, it didn’t take me long to realize that the doctor’s office… (read more)

Birthday and Anniversary Celebrations

Last week seemed like one long celebration, beginning with my 23rd wedding anniversary and ending with my 45th birthday. Susan and I kicked off the week in a small cabin outside of Guthrie. The cabin was one of four that collectively made up Arcadian Getaways. The cabin we reserved was cozy and two-stories, complete with everything a person could want including a screened-in sauna and hot tub, which provided a great view of the surrounding trees and stars late in the evening. While staying in Guthrie we had dinner at a local diner named Stacy’s Place. We went in with… (read more)

Facebook’s Latest Change is a Blow for Bloggers

Facebook made a slight change to its site this week, a change so slight that you probably didn’t even notice. You might not even consider the change to be a big deal. To millions of bloggers (such as myself), it’s a pretty big deal. On Wednesday, August 1st, Facebook disabled automatic cross-posting to personal profiles. Technical mumbo-jumbo aside, that means Facebook no longer allows people like me to automatically publish links to the blog posts I post on RobOHara.com to Facebook. Allow me to offer a tiny peek behind the curtain. Here, on RobOHara.com, the blog posts I publish in… (read more)

Looking Back with The Goldbergs

My friends have a pretty good idea about what kinds of things I’ll like, so after three of them independently suggested I check out ABC’s hit sitcom The Goldbergs, I decided to watch an episode and see what the fuss was about. It’s been just over a month, and I’ve now watched all five seasons of the show. The show, which debuted in 2013, is a family-based sitcom set in the 1980s. The show combines the “looking back narration” style of The Wonder Years with a heaping serving of nostalgic references a’la That ’70s Show. The Goldbergs focuses on the… (read more)

Give it Away, Give it Away, Now

If I were to tell you I purchased the computer currently sitting on my dining room table fifteen years ago, you might wonder what I was doing with such an ancient piece of technology. The truth is, when I purchased the computer back in 2003, it was already 20 years old! The machine is an Apple IIc, the fourth machine in Apple’s line of “II” computers — there was the original, followed by the II+, the IIe, and finally the IIc. Despite weighing almost eight pounds, the “c” in the computer’s name stood for “compact,” and, relatively speaking compared to… (read more)

3D Printing Useful Things

I’ve owned my 3D printer for eight months now. I spent the first six months printing “decorative” items that ended up sitting on shelves — and while those things are fun to print, it’s tough to justify the money I spent on the printer ($600) when only printing cookie cutters and action figure stands. Over the past couple of months, things started to change. It all started roughly two months ago, when I realized I needed some bookends for my DVD shelves. Thinking they would only cost a dollar or two, I went to Amazon in search of some cheap… (read more)

Poppin’ Cookin’ Candy Sushi

We’ve had so much fun shopping at the Chinatown Supermarket since discovering it last year. I love weird stuff packaged in bright colors, and have had fun wandering up and down the aisles picking random drinks, bags of candy, and packages of Ramen based solely on the cute and colorful packaging. Last week I spotted this item in the checkout lane, and tossed it into the basket on a whim. What I thought I was buying was a little box filled with sushi-shaped candy. What we got was so much weirder. Back at home while unpacking our bags, I noticed… (read more)

Kermit and the Widow

I am standing in a stranger’s garage. Based on all the items for sale in the garage, I suspect the man who used to live here recently passed away, and his family is now selling his belongings. It’s obvious that the family has both organized and is running the estate sale, rather than hiring a professional company. The multiple signs throughout the neighborhood drawing us to the sale were handwritten on poster board. Nothing for sale has been cleaned. Someone has gone through and placed little round stickers with prices written in ink on everything in the garage. The grinder… (read more)
