The biggest problem with workout gyms is that they are social gathering places filled with people with whom I do not wish to socially gather. I have no interest in talking with complete strangers about their biceps, triceps, deltoids or hemmoroids. As I huff and puff while trotting along on my treadmill at a slower pace than everyone else, I don’t much feel like chatting.
Someone should open a gym for geeks. Each treadmill should contain a LCD screen with cable television, a gaming system, and headphones attached. Each one should be private or at least semi-private — perhaps each one could be in a cubicle, complete with a private changing area and scale.
You may be on to a huge money maker…
You’re wrong. The biggest problem with gyms is they expect you to actually do something! That’s why I have my treadmill in the back bedroom of my house. It sits there quietly and leaves me alone!!! Mom
Our gym in Edmond has multiple televisions in front of treadmills, bikes, ellipticials and stairmasters. All have phone jacks so you can listen to the television in peace. It also has a stereo/cd/radio that you can use. The free-weights and machines are separated, so you’re not mixing the beginners and the ‘roid-heads. Best time to go is in the morning. Our gym opens at 5:00 a.m. and the crowd is usually older adults/senior citizens who want to do their workout in peace. A nice bonus is the free coffee too. :)
Otherwise, you might invest in a home gym. ($ CHA-CHING $) Those usually fail because lack of motivation to use it. If you’re motiviated to go to the gym, you’ll work out. Every garage sale has some type of gym equipment that was hardly used. Also, get a subscription to some Men’s health magazines. Those have great tips on proper workouts and healthy eatting.
Great idea. I could go for private stair climbers (when I am fatigued I tend to stumble a bit on them).
The small gym which I am currently using has been great. I was a little apprehensive when I first went in (I am overweight and felt uncomfortable even being in a gym). The manager asked me to look around and tell me what I saw. I looked around and stated “I see people working out.” He said “Right! What you don’t see is a bunch of people socializing. People come here to workout and leave. No one is paying any attention to anyone else unless they are being paid to do so.” I was sold and have been going every week since.
