A couple of weeks ago, I heard a great crash upstairs. After flying up the stairs and reaching my computer room I discovered that the cat had got behind some of my plastic shelves and shoved them over, making a huge mess and breaking a few things in the process. To sort through the mess I brought in another set of metal shelves to use for staging. I walked out of the room for just a second and then I heard another crash behind me. The cat had struck again. By the time I got back to the room, it looked like this:
The cat was lucky that day she can run faster than I do.
I had been thinking about upgrading the shelves in that room for a while and, with most of them now on the floor, I decided now was as good a time as any.
These bracket shelves go up quickly and easily. All you need is a drill, a few screws, and a level to make sure things are even. Oh, and a credit card, because they are expensive. They obviously cost more, but the advantage is that they are adjustable, they are easy to put together, and they don’t need to be painted or sanded or anything like that.
The weekend before last my friends Charles and Brian arrived from out of town. I finished things up the day before the arrived, and got the computer room looking like this!
The shelves look a little cluttered at the moment as I’m still sorting through things, but they’re a big improvement from what I had. And, they’re relatively cat proof.
Cats are selfish assholes. Unfortunately, they are also adorable.
No – Cats are good for a lot of things – mainly feeding the people of the word, and ALF.
NOT a cat person.
Sounds like it’s time to close the door and keep the cat out of the room. If the cat gets anywhere near the room, use a spray bottle filled with water and give it a squirt. The cat will learn real quick not to be in your room.
Now to the shelves, they look amazing! How much weight can each one hold? Based on the shelve with the Commodore 1541 and Apple II disk drives, I’m going to guess at least 40 pounds.
Side note, your post is missing a post title. Looked funny in my RSS reader. Only really noticed it when I came to comment directly.
Ack! I added a post title — that was an oversight on my part.
I am not sure how much each shelf can hold, but I originally put up only two wall supports and the boards were already beginning to sag before I put anything on them. I quickly went back and added a third and they seem much more stable.
Keeping the cat out of the room seems like a good idea. The problem is, the room next to this one is covered in shelves holding hundreds of Star Wars “things” so if she decides to exact revenge it will be a bad day for both me and the cat.
I can see how it would be an oversight doing a post title, your cat went all Hulk smash on your room. I’d be a little frazzled myself. I’m actually surprised to not see the cat stuffed on a shelve now ;)
As for your Star Wars collection, I think it’s time to have a talk with the cat… say something like “you can have all the canned tuna you want, just don’t smash up my room(s) again”. Should work. You are a cat whisperer right?
Those shelves do look nice. I need something like this. Looks like a trip to IKEA is in my future.
One of my cats has decided my bed is her litter box. It’s a great way to wake up.
This reminds me of the time my cat knocked over my PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii domino style in the middle of the night. Everything survived (including the cat) but it was certainly a shock to wake up from.
Always interested in hearing tales of the good old days. Funny enough, we’re only two years apart in age, but sometimes it feels like much more, go figure why (even though I do remember the 80s… mostly starting in 1984).
Really depends on the cat, some just like a small perch to sit on. I love seeing the old Commodore stuff although I was mostly an Atari computer guy.
