Exercise has slowed to a halt during these cold winter days. I’d been walking at night after the kids have gone to sleep, and these days it’s so dark and cold by then that it’s not a very enjoyable experience. I’ve tried the treadmill a few times, but it just isn’t the same. I lost two pounds last week, although with such a small number it’s hard to tell if that’s real weight, water weight, or what. Either way, I’ll take it as a small victory.
I had a heck of a scare earlier this week. While out walking one night I ran into a giant, black, unhappy pitbull. One problem with loud music and headphones is that you often don’t hear things (like cars or animals) until it’s too late. I managed to walk around the dog, who then followed me for half a block, growling and barking the entire time. Maybe I need to start carrying a golf club with me or something.
Small baseball bats are good, but get the aluminum kind. I’ve seen my dad break a wooden one over a dog’s head during a dog fight, and it didn’t even phase the critter. If I had to use it, I would definitely want the dog to take notice. A good strong golf club would also be handy, and there are exercises you can do as you walk using it also. Jack has some clubs if you want to borrow one. He sure doesn’t use them any more!
