On Friday, June 16th, Dad was taken to Deaconess Hospital for renal failure, low blood sugar, and dehydration. He hadn’t been feeling very well for a couple of days, and now we know why. Dad’s doctor originally thought that he was having gall bladder or kidney problems, but it now appears that his kidneys were simply being affected by the dehydration and low blood sugar, and that once those things improved so would everything else. Over the past three days, nurses have been both treating his dehydration and raising his blood sugar level with a glucose IV drip. Friday evening they performed an ultrasound on dad’s kidneys and gall bladder, which showed no damage and confirmed our theory that the kidney malfucntions were a symptom rather than a cause.
Dad and I spent the majority of Father’s Day hanging out in Deaconess hospital, flipping cable channels and napping off and on. You might think that it sounds sucky, but it really made me appreciate how much I love my dad and I guess that’s what Father’s Day is all about. Around dinner time I went home and spent some quality time with my own family, who I haven’t seen a lot of since Friday.
Dad’s supposed to see a couple of specialists today and if everything goes well he’ll get his walking papers this afternoon. Cross your fingers.
