It’s funny what life tosses your way from time to time.
On Sunday (three days ago), Susan, the kids and I went to visit an open house for sale. The house is gigantic, and has lots of cool features, and isn’t too far from where we live now (about 10 miles north).
So, we bought it.
It was more complicated than that, of course. Between the low interest rate and our current horrible housing market, we got a great deal on the place. The purchase is not as big of a surprise as it may seem; Susan and I have been saving for several years now with plans of buying or building a new home in a few years anyway, so finding this particular home for sale just kind of just sped things along. The trade off for not building brand new (the new house was built in 2005) or building exactly what we wanted is that we’re saving over $100k on the house.
We don’t close until mid-October, which gives us a few weeks to start packing and moving things into a storage unit. A good family friend of ours (Pat Deckard) is stopping by our house later this week to give us some cleaning and staging tips. I suspect one will be, “get rid of any trace that Rob ever lived here,” but we’ll see.
By clicking here you can see a few pictures of the new place. Expect many posts about packing, moving, and de-cluttering over the next month or two.
The new house looks really nice. How long until you walk in and it says “Rob lives here”?
I’m guessing that he’ll have something with him to mark his territory upon closing. Like a pac-man game or something ‘small’ (in Rob terms).
Congrats on the new home. Can’t wait till you post on how you are packing all your stuff. That could be your next book. Is the arcade coming with you?
This is epic! Way to go Rob! Excited to see how you move all your stuff and how you organize it in the new place. How long have you been in your current house?
does that door in the garage lead to a tornado shelter?
@Joshua: Currently, there’s no space for arcade games (not for 30, anyway). The move will most likely involve a massive “fire sale” of arcade machines.
@MattW: Thanks, man! We are very proud and excited. We have been in our current house for 9 years, so Mason was about 6 months old when we moved in.
@BigDaddyChester: We haven’t opened that door yet, but yeah, tornado shelters in the garage are becoming more common here. I plan on labeling it the “Zombie Shelter” very soon.
I would expect nothing less with the Zombie signage! Very nice digs. Looks very spacious and open. Congrats!
Must be that time of year. Our house just went on the market.
Looks to be pretty roomy. Bet your kids will enjoy the back yard.

:(
Turn that frown upside-down, Zach. Who knows, you might end up with one!
Very true. And my plans of setting up at OVGE this next year still seem to be holding up. Hopefully it will be at a good time for me. I’m hoping summer, my teachers 10 double-sided-20-problem-a-side-worksheets-week-plus-whatever-other-crap-I-can-think-up philosophy is killing me. one had I have to squeeze 216 nouns(9 categories) out of a 6-page Mexican love story. >:I
