Earlier this evening, Morgan came running into the house to inform me that Mommy had found some bugs in the pool. Apparently the two of them had fished out a dozen or so of the critters, and tossed them out onto the sidewalk. I grabbed my camera, and snapped this:
Even after a couple of hours of searching Google and Facebooking, we’re still not sure what they are. They’re about two inches long, like the water, but appear to come up for air from time to time. They’ve got pincers on their face, and tiny little swimming legs. About half an hour ago, I went outside and shot this (poor) video.
Seriously, if anybody knows what these things are, we would love to know.
Well, I wouldn’t let one crawl into my ear and attach itself to my brain, if you know what I mean.
Not that this is likely to happen, but I’m just saying I’d probably smoosh it before it got that chance. Just on general principle.
I think they might be a beetle larvae. guess you will have to raise them to see what they turn into. the water may kill them. keep some in jar with dirt too. who knows what they eat so hopefully they have eaten enough to change. but I am going with Carabid larvae
after several tries of searching for matches with a photo recognition system, I am proud to say that it may very well be a new species. I would try to pick up some formaldehyde and take a jar full of them things to someplace like OSU, maybe they could tell you what to do with those aliens!
My sister solved the mystery — they are aquatic beetle larvae. Nasty looking little buggers!

I’m glad no one hopped in the pool to start cleaning it and found one of these things the hard way!
I seen this movie once where they found little bugs in the pool and the home- owners killed them. Then later that night the huge underground ones came out from holes in the ground… Never mind, I like the Wrath of Kahn reference better.
If I had had the picture they had had it would have picked it up. That was a waste of time on my part.
No quest for knowledge is a waste of time, Zach! Life is an adventure!
True, but all it picked up with the first picture was a bunch of roadkill, most covered in snow.
Anyways, do you know what happened around here? People just haven’t been posting in The Gas Chamber lately, it seems like me and you are the only ones active lately. Maybe if I spread the word…..

If anyone figures out what these are i’d love to know!!!!!
We have some that look almost identical, but only about an inch in length, in our swimming pool. Actually, it seems we have a couple different types of little worms in there. We’re trying to regulate chemicals and get rid of the algae and pests, but looks like we’ve got a problem with the filter. We haven’t been in our pool yet this summer due to the algae. I just discovered the worms today though.
