WordPress offers lots of cool features that I rarely use, but two that I get quite a bit of use out of are the schedule feature and the draft feature. The schedule feature allows me to tell WordPress when to post a previously written blog entry. Often times I will sit down and write two or three blog entries and then schedule them to appear at random times (6AM, Noon, and 6PM most commonly) over the next couple of days. The other feature I use frequently is the draft feature, which allows me to save half-written blog entries and work on them at a later date.
The problem with draft entries is, when they sit too long, they become irrelevant. Right now I have four or five half-written posts that for various reasons never got finished. I decided to clean out my draft folder last night, so here’s a look at what you missed — or, more accurately, what you’ll never see.
Phoenix from the Lames: This was a long and rambling entry about Joaquin Phoenix and his stupid documentary, “I’m Still Here”. I never finished the post because I never got around to seeing the documentary.
Five Signs You Are Obese: The first problem with this entry was I kept coming up with signs; I think I was at 12 or 13 when I finally stopped. The other problem with this entry was that I had intended it to be funny, but it kind of came off as pitiful and self-loathing. I never could get it to seem funnier, and it’s been sitting in the draft pile for months.
Golf Cart Adventures: This was a pictoral kind of thing I had planned to do with Mason, but I never got around to taking the pictures. Yawn.
If I Were Invisible: This is the only one in the slush pile I may finish someday. Shortly after reading H. G. Wells’ The Invisible Man, I slammed the book’s plot (the actions of the Invisible Man, mainly) and decided to talk about the things I would do if I were invisible. The problem became I couldn’t come up with very many good things, and the article took a nose dive at that point. Maybe if I do some more brainstorming on that one I can turn it around.
So there you have it. For those of you who say, “Good God, could this site be any worse?”, now you know it could be.
I would be ironic if this particular blog entry was sitting on the slush pile for a while.
*IT*. “It” would be ironic. **embarrassed**
Hmm. I’d use the scheduler if it worked, but the prescribed fix didn’t work when I tried it. I use drafts a lot though. I have a ton of material I’m sitting on, much of which won’t ever see the light of day either. But sometimes I’ll dust something off from there and finish or fix it. It helps on those days where there’s absolutely nothing to write about.
Drop me an e-mail about the scheduler — maybe we can compare notes and see what’s going wrong with yours.
I think if you were invisible you wouldn’t be able to see because no light would reflect off the reflecty part of your glazzies.
