As everybody around her knows, Susan is nearly impossible to buy Christmas gifts for because she doesn’t want much. Hearing Susan say “I sure would like a (whatever)” is like finding a twenty dollar bill blowing down the street — you’re lucky, and you had better hang on to it. Each year around her birthday and Christmas, she’ll mention one or two things — just enough for me to hand out whenever people ask me, “So, what does Susan want this year?”

This year was supposed to be simple. After getting my iPhone last week, Susan said she would like one too. My phone (with a two-year contract) was $199. Today after lunch we swung by the AT&T store to do the transaction. Not only was it something she wanted, but it was something I knew no one else would get her.

Turns out, Susan’s phone is not eligible for an upgrade until March, and the guy behind the counter either would or could not bend the rules despite the fact we have been with AT&T for over 10 years. Our options were to wait until March and pay $199, or buy the phone today for $599. The third alternative was to open another phone line in Mason’s name, put the iPhone on that, and then cancel Susan’s phone next March.

We went with the “wait until March” scenario — which, by the way, means I officially have no Christmas gift for Susan as of December 23rd.

  1. I understand. I went to Macy’s for yours today, just to be told, Oh we don’t carry those in the OKC stores. I hate Macy’s, have boycotted it for the last 2-3 years. I only broke my boycott for you, and that’s the thanks I get. Now, what ELSE do you want for Christmas? (I promise I’ll have you something good, just not what I planned.)

  2. No worries Rob, the 23rd is when I usually do my shopping!

Wander around aimlessly, and you’ll eventually find or think of something that would be perfect.

Best of luck, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  3. Dude, I had the exact same issue with Verizon and the Droid. I got a Droid in early November and Kristen’s been salivating over it since I got it. Ashton wanted one too. Problem is, I used our only eligible upgrade for mine. So to get two new Droids (not the ones you are looking for) I had to add two lines to my account (for a total of five lines) at $15 each and buy two $199 phones. Ugh. Otherwise they would have been $500+ each.

  4. I’d just wait. I have been waiting for mine to be eligible for about that same amount of time (since the 3GS came out, whenever that was), and now that it is I’m holding out until after the holidays because we have already spent a bunch with a trip to Costa Rica and Xmas presents. My current phone still works fine and looks up things on the internet fine too, so I can wait until things stabilize a bit.
