Spam Sandwich

I installed a new WordPress spam filter today that worked so well it stopped all spammers, registered users, and even myself from leaving comments. The good news was, I got 0 comments over the past 12 hours. The bad news is, I got 0 comments all day.

Old plug-in removed, Akismet reinstalled … all is well with the world.

  1. Akismet can do virtually no wrong by me – I have yet to see it make a misstep anywhere on my site where comments are actually left. Is it not doing enough spamcatching for you or something?

  2. I checked my Akismet stats just yesterday and it has stopped over 33,000 spam comments. Have you had any issues with it?

  3. I was using Spam Karma 2, which was doing pretty good but I noticed it hadn’t been updated in forever so I decided to see what else was out there. I found “WP-SpamFree” and based on rave I installed that. Unfortunately SpamFree worked so well that no one, including me, could leave comments. I just kept getting a warning that I was posting from a known spamming IP range … which was odd because I was trying it from the server itself. After a bit of Googling I fount other people with the same problem and no known solution, so I dropped that, got a Googple API Key, and went to Akismet.

I’m a little nervous at the moment as it flagged Smack’s comment as spam and I had to pull it out of the spam pile.
