A Midnight Walk Pays Off!

After watching “The Wrestler” last night (great film!) I decided to go for a midnight walk around the neighborhood. I’m definitely doing more walking because of my iPod Touch. Better living through technology, I say.

About ten minutes into my walk, an idea hit me for a book. Not the whole story, but one of those “what if this happened” ideas. The longer I walked, the more the simple conflict began to develop. Halfway around the neighborhood characters were beginning to take shape: the hacker on the run, the cop who had once double crossed him, the friend in jail. New characters continued to introduce themselves with each new scene my mind envisioned. I cursed myself for not having a pen and pencil and tried to take mental notes.

By the end of my 45 minute walk, the entire plot had presented itself to me. All the major dots are there and waiting for me to connect them.

Everything I’ve read it right. You don’t write the stories — they write themselves. You just have to be listening for them and ready to capture them when they show up.

  1. So now you will have to have a digital recorder along with you on your walks so you can talk to yourself and take notes….course someone walking and talking to themselves at midnight probably won’t attract too much attention?
