I Was “So” Close …

I started buying cargo shorts back in late 90s not to make a fashion statement, but because of their valuable pocket real estate. By 1999 I was regularly carrying around a cell phone, a Palm Pilot, and a digital camera, in addition to whatever else I had on my person (wallet, keys, etc). I couldn’t wear regular jean shorts because the pockets bulged too much, and I couldn’t wear sweat shorts because they would fall down from all the added gadget weight.

I believe I bought my Palm Treo back in 2003 — a “smart phone” that was meant to replace all those devices I was carrying around. And it did, kind of. Its resolution didn’t match my camera’s, the PDA didn’t have a touch screen like my old Palm Pilot, and the phone was no where near as good as my old phone. I tried using it as an mp3 player, but I hated that too.

In 2008 I replaced my Treo with a Samsung BlackJack II (a Windows Mobile smart phone). I still carry my digital camera, so that puts me back up to two gadgets. In my laptop bag I also have my Kindle 2, my iPod Touch, and my GPS (can’t leave it in the car — it’ll get stolen again), along with my netbook and my laptop. Add in a bevy of chargers, cords and other odds and ends and my bag is starting to bulge like my pockets were ten years ago.

Sigh. I was so close to getting down to one device for everything. I’m starting to think that the iPhone might be “the one” … I’ll have to wait until the contract runs out on my current phone and re-evaluate the situation then and see how the iPhone vs. Google Android battle shakes out.

  1. I’m waiting for the Palm Pre to come out… gonna give Palm’s new WebOS a try… I’ve been with Palm so long I hate to leave :)

  2. We have a Touch and I must say iPhone wins hands down on interface over any other mobile device I’ve used. I have a BlackJack II and it is really a pain sometimes. I am hoping the other phones catch up by the time I get ready to buy a new phone in a couple of years so I don’t have to buy an iPhone.

  3. I’ve heeeeeeeeeeard that the next rev (of the iPhone) will have a video camera and a flash for the regular camera. I grabbed the 3G and while I love it, yeah, hold out for three months or whatever it’s gonna be till the next rev and you’ll get a hardware bonus, not just all the software stuff everyone’ll get.

If it helps you decide, I would honestly rather get shot than give my iPhone to a mugger. It’s become that much a part of my life. I’m not saying I’d take a bullet in the face, heart or junk, but if it were pretty much anywhere else I’d just let the guy shoot me and describe the pain in Twitterfon on the way to the hospital.

  4. I have an iPhone ( this was posted on it). And I have to say i’m continuously impressed with it. The phone portion works as well as you’d like if you live in an ATT friendly area. I also like being able to RDP for free anywhere.

  5. Nokia N97. I own the N95 and it has a beautiful 5meg camera, beautiful media player. Tons of add-ons, play .avi’s, wifi…and the N97 will not drop any of it. Oh, GPS to boot. You can simply google Nokia N97. I guarantee it will replace all of your gadgets. The N95 did for me.

  6. Smac – that is the only reason that I would really like to have an iPhone – for RDP. No more worrying about having to carry around a laptop in case of a server emergency. Which fortunately is pretty rare, but seems to occur when I am in the middle of a lake in the middle of nowhere.
