He was only 21 months old and had only ever heard Russian, so the prospect of communication during those first few delicate days was kinda freaking us out!

So, we dug into baby sign language and built a small library of words that we thought would get us by. Sure enough, by early day 2, he was getting pretty good:

He’s a VERY vocal 6 yr old now – far more verbose than most of his peers – (probably because we’ve always talked with him so much because of that shaky start) but he does still use sign language at times. It’s especially funny (and sometimes a little flustering) when he can’t be bothered to say “No” but signs it instead.

And when he started Summer Camp at a new private school (that he’ll begin formally attending in August) his Camp “teacher” was thrilled to learn that he knew some signing and she’s been working with him to build on his repertoire.

I’m hopeful that we can continue to foster at least some passing degree of sign fluency with him. I believe it could be one of those uncommon skills that would come in handy later on.

Still have some books and flash cards if you need them. Let me know if you need some help. I’m still in love with the language I just wish I got to practice it more!
