We replaced ours after the second repair. It’s held up well and we’re happy with it, but it was expensive–about 4 grand. Took a while to pay that off. Our A/C was fairly new, but it was from the PC Chips of air conditioners.

Best of luck, and seriously, look into some thermal (aka blackout) curtains. They help keep the heat out in the summer time and they’re not terribly expensive. We got a bunch on clearance at JC Penney this weekend for $19 a pop. The weather is mild today so they haven’t been tested hard, but they did keep the intense morning sun out of one room and the A/C didn’t have to kick in at all before noon. And at night they keep noise and light pollution out, which is nice too.

(If you threaten something via a Tweet would that make it a twreat?)

While I am all for companies making a profit, the profit margins on AC repair seem extremely high. P&L to replace a $35 capacitor is $130. P&L to replace a $5 breaker $130. P&L to replace a $25 contactor is $130. The problem that I have is that each of these repairs takes 5 minutes (including time to walk back to the truck to get the part). The bigger problem is that if you have multiple failures – you still pay $130 for each of the repairs above. Diagnostic trip charge $100. However, those guys have to work outside most of the day regardless of temperature. I do not, and for that I am grateful.
