I did a lot of overnight POS upgrade projects for various retailers and would have the whole run of a place to myself but for some manager hanging out in a back office; Big shops like Best Buy or Sears were always the weirdest.

I look at buildings for insurance companies. I’m not an adjuster – I’m at the other end of the “agreement.” One building I recently looked through was an old K-Mart building. It had been redone into a combination indoor go-kart track, RC car race track, and hobby shop. The contact simply said, “Bring a flashlight.” I would be surveying the place alone – and the breakers were set for various systems, and nothing on the panels was correctly marked, so he preferred me to not start turning everything on.

It turns out that this place was DARK inside – especially the rear storage areas – almost like a cave. I had one of those tactical flashlights and I could focus it as tight as possible and NOT see to the other side of the building. It was like I stepped into an X-Files episode – not onto the set, mind you, into an ACTUAL EPISODE. It was creepy.

Luckily, I did not encounter any rats, pigeons, or the undead.

Often, there would be huge abandoned warehouses that would have some point of entry and we would explore them. Not the smartest thing for pre-teens to do, but it gave me similar feelings to which you describe. Explore on, friend.
