I cannot be trusted with an open cup of hot beverage. I once killed a laptop with a cup of coffee at work in the 1990s. I was tempted to fudge the story, but in the end I did not. I milked it a bit though. I called the help desk, and told them my laptop stopped working after I spilled a cup of coffee on it. There was a moment of silence (during which, I assume, the guy hit mute and had a laugh at my expense) and then he made arrangements to pick up the dead laptop.
