Guns N’ Roses LIVE in Tulsa, OK

Last night, 25 years after seeing them perform live for the first time, I got to see Guns N’ Roses perform once again, this time in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My friend Tim is a big Guns N’ Roses fan. He and his wife Dawn along with Susan and I have seen the band live three times — in Norman, back in 2011; in Las Vegas in 2012, for Tim’s 40th birthday; and Tuesday night, November 17, in Tulsa. Additionally, even though we hadn’t met yet, Tim and I were both at the Oklahoma City Guns N’ Roses show back in 1992.… (read more)

OVGE this Saturday in Tulsa

The 9th Annual (wow!) Oklahoma Video Game Expo (OVGE) will take place this Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As always, I and some friends will have a table set up and once again the entire hall will be filled with people buying, selling, and playing video games. At my table this year, I will be joined by two friends: award-winning Interactive Fiction author Robb “Ice Cream Jonsey” Sherwin, and the creator of the infamous remote controlled phone video, Steve “Aardvark” Davis. Additionally, I will be sharing a bit of table space with Charles “Ubikuberalles” Pearson, who will be showing off some… (read more)

OVGE — Tulsa, Tomorrow

Early this morning I posted a blog about tomorrow’s Oklahoma Video Game Expo (OVGE), which takes place in Tulsa, OK at the Spirit Bank Event Center from 9AM – 5PM ($5 admission). I talked about how I’ll be there all day, and how there will be games there (to both buy and play) ranging all the way back to the Atari 2600 and the original Nintendo Entertainment System, all the way up to the PlayStation 3, the XBox 360 and the Wii. Over the past day or so I’ve begun re-routing my mail through GMail instead of my own mail… (read more)

Our Five-Year-Old Hot Water Heater Broke

I was off work last Friday and so Susan and I had planned a day trip to Tulsa. While getting ready that morning I hopped in the shower and noticed there was no hot water. In one of our older houses we owned a hot water heater with a pilot light that was constantly going out, although we haven’t had that problem in either of our last two houses. I got pretty good at relighting it and wasn’t too worried about restarting this one before we left for the day. A few minutes later Susan discovered the real problem, which… (read more)

Camping at the Drive-in: A Birthday Adventure!

For my past few birthdays, Susan has planned little trips and surprised me every single time. Susan is good at planning things and surprising me and I am good at being surprised, so it all works out. Last Friday Susan asked me to pack an overnight bag and prepare for a fun overnight adventure, and I did. Shortly before our departure, Susan filled me in on what she had planned: an overnight stay at an AirBnB trailer located at the Tee Pee Drive-in in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, right off of Route 66. She also said several of our friends would be… (read more)

All Aboard the Sushi Train!

Last month while visiting Minnesota, Susan and I ate at Sushi Train, a local restaurant. I’ve since learned that there is also a restaurant in nearby Tulsa called Sushi Train, but the two places are unrelated. “Sushi train” is slang for any conveyer-delt driven sushi bar, so discovering that there are multiple restaurants with this same name is not completely surprising. It would be like finding two buffets 1,000 miles apart that were both named “Buffet.” It’s hard to know what’s authentic and what’s not authentic when it comes to Japanese and Chinese food. For example, 99% of all wasabi… (read more)

Route 66: Leftover Bits and Pieces

Susan and I saw a lot of fun things along Route 66 post that didn’t quite warrant entire blog posts. To wrap up this week’s series of posts, here are a few of the odd and ends we saw along the way. POPS 66 Pops is a restaurant located on Route 66 not far from I-35, and was one of the first things we saw along our route. It was too late for breakfast and too early for lunch when we passed Pops, but we did stop and pick out a couple of drinks from Pops selection of more than… (read more)

Wheels, Wheels, and More Wheels on Route 66

Route 66 is all about cruising, and during our short trip down Oklahoma’s portion of Route 66 we encountered not one but two museums — one dedicated to vehicles with four wheels, and the other was stuffed which two-wheeled ones. Both were just the right size to stretch your legs and see some cool rides in the process. SEABA STATION MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM 336992 E Hwy 66 – Warwick, OK Link: SeabaStation.com The first museum we encountered along our journey was a motorcycle museum located just outside Chandler, OK in the former “Seaba Filling Station.” From the outside, the building appears… (read more)

Getting Our Kicks at Ken’s Pizza on Route 66

Susan and I were off work for Veterans Day, and so on Friday Susan planned a day trip for the two of us up Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Tulsa. Route 66 is a road full of nostalgia, and nothing on Friday was more nostalgic for me than our visit to Ken’s Pizza in Chandler, Oklahoma for lunch. When Susan and I were in high school we had an open campus for lunch. At twelve minutes past 11 (our lunch period was from 11:12-12:02 for some confusing reason), approximately 700 juniors and seniors poured out of our school and… (read more)

Saturday Was Not Halloween

Someone in my neighborhood decided that Saturday, October 29th, would be our official “trick or treat” night. I don’t remember a discussion or being asked or voting on it or anything like that. Someone I don’t know announced the change on my neighborhood’s Facebook page, the official source of information for what’s happening in my neighborhood, and that was that. Fortunately my wife saw the announcement and had our candy bowl ready, else we would have been confused the first time children in costumes rang our bell Saturday night which, and I think I’ve already made my point here, was… (read more)
